Benedetto Marcello, son of a Venetian senator, was an eclectic and talented man. Trained in music, literature and jurisprudence, he was a civil servant in the lagoon city for more than two decades, and at the same time was not only a man of letters, a poet and a theoretician, but also a composer of instrumental and chamber music as well as of masses, oratorios, cantatas, duets and works for the stage. In 1725, he composed a serenade for Kaiser Karl VI and shortly after for the Viennese court the oratorio Joaz, based on a libretto by the court poet Apostolo Zeno. Here we meet a composition which, while acknowledging common forms, styles and techniques, and respecting contemporary structures, nevertheless transgresses inimitably the borders of convention.
