Leonardo Leo (1694-1744) is the most important representative of the so called "Neapolitan" opera school. In Naples, where he died in 1744, his life was decorated with musical offices, last of all as the leader of the court orchestra (Hofkapelle). Alongside eighty operas, he also composed a dozen serenades and cantatas, to which the present piece for three vocal soloists and orchestra belongs. It is not known when this piece was first performed; though his name is on the title page of the manuscript, some music scholars even doubt that Leo composed the work.
"A varied work, so well judged in conveying the joy and amusement of the ceremony and the wedding party, and at the same time it is as if the composer winks at us as he demonstrates his sophisticated handling of the inherited tradition and innovation alike." (Bernhard Drobig)
